presentation!!! almost there!!! decided how to present!

so i'm listening to a presentation right now
sorry jenna!!!

anways just wanted to say that i'm extremely nervous now!
i actually thought of and decided on a presentation style today on the drive here to uni!
i've bought a few small photoframes and i've printed and cut down my images to fit in those frames but also in a way so that is someone saw them, they would need to or would like to view the whole image to see and understand the feeling of the piece
they are also in black and white which is a good contrast to the coloured images.

anyways...
back to presentations......

presentations - i'm so nervous!

so today is presentation today
gah!

i'm so nervous!!!!

and i'm still thinking about a presentation concept.
i mean i've got some ideas in my mind but i haven't made up my mind which way i want to present yet
AND THERES LIKE 4 HOURS LEFT!

GAH!

some thoughts about music and copyright

well
it's almost the end of semester
hmm..... really? whoa.....
i can't believe it!

anyways....
i've been thinking about putting some music to my stop motion animation video
(if you haven't watched it yet you can view it along with my other possible artworks here)

anyways.....
after watching back again once a few days had past i had a thought that it might or i might add some music to it to emphasise the mood and feelings behind the piece.
for Snow White i was hoping to put some Evanescence music to it
they are a great band who use alot of "hard emotion" in their songs which is perfect
(i've seemed to use them alot this semester for inspiration haven't i?)
but i didn't/don't know if a song with lyrics (their more recent ones) would work or maybe an older song of theirs which is completely instrumental.
some of their songs have amazing lyrics which would fit perfectly to the video but they sound doesn't work as well, but an instrumental piece might be too overbearing and boring making people walk away without hearing/watching the whole thing.....

hmmmm.......
i asked Jenna about copyright of using music in a student piece.
i also did some of my own research after i got a response from Jenna
and because Evanescence music (which at the moment i don't know if i'll use or not) would be copyrighted i can't put it the animation with music on my blog.
i'm sorry about that
but here are a few options i'm thinking about:

  1. Imaginary from Origin
  2. Lies from Origin
  3. Even in Death from Origin
  4. Demise from Origin ** part of
  5. Eternal from Origin ** part of
  6. Where Will You Go from Origin
  7. Hello from Fallin
  8. My Immortal (band or accoustic version) from Fallin
  9. The Only One from The Open Door
  10. Like You from The Open Door
  11. Lose Control from The Open Door
  12. Snow White Queen from The Open Door --> --> chosen basically for title but lyrics also really relates to video!
  13. Weight of The World from The Open Door
yes that's quite a list but it's alot shorter than what i have in total.
hmmm....
it looks like i have alot of thinking to do between now and presentations...........................

intersting and creative ways of presenting art

here are some websites that i've found that have some interesting way to present artwork or some tips about presenting work:

  • http://androidart.me/results/ --> this website has tips and possibilities of presenting and creating digital artworks
  • http://www.tendaysontheisland.com/_blog/Latest_News/post/Craig_Walsh_Digital_Odyssey/ -->  Craig Walsh is an artist who specializes in presenting images through large projections
  • http://www.youtube.com/user/LearningConnexion --> youtube site that has some interesting videos about creating, presenting and recording artwork.

here are some images i found while browsing the net:

update - after placement stuff!

well.....
haha....
i just figured out that i haven't posted anything relating to my digital art for almost about 4 weeks.....
whoa....
I apologise!

placement has been a mess, an experience, and an overall exhausting.
so i haven't had a chance to do much of my digital artwork apart from starting to plan what/where/how the photos i want to take and then just waiting for the weather to clear up for me to be able to take photos.

so i'm just checking in basically...
hope everyone had a happy, restful and reflective easter.
will post again soon!

very VERY interesting blogspot website i found......

This blog spot is done by someone else with a similar idea/concept
except the owner of this one has gone on a slightly different look and feel to her work or ideas:

check out her page:
http://vickysroom.blogspot.com/2010/08/naughty-fairytales.html
i do have to warn people that it isn't for younger eyes to view!!!

i love the first few images - the classic representations, but i love the little story the owner/publisher types underneath them which justifies the reason the images below that!

some more research.......

Within the past year or so, i have come across a youtube page which is not an average youtube page.
This youtube page is dedicated to celebrating and highlighting some amazing acting, films, music and more. however the group or people who run this page have decided to do these tributes in a different manner.
check out some of their work:

***to view their official site click here***

if you are wondering the name of this group, they have called themselves The Hillywood Show.
it is a group of friends that originally got together to make a funny video one day with a simple camera and some costumes they rented, made, or borrowed. After that one video, a huge fanbase has occured, created the infamous The Hillywood Show.
The creators are 2 sisters, Hannah and Hilly Hindi and a few of their friends have created such a phenomenon that nothing is ever going to surpass them! (well i hope not anyways - these guys are fantastic!!!)
i love their mix of parody, costumes, music, dance and more. they create the greatest, most inventive (what i think) video art that has ever been produced for a youtube fanbase!
i personally love the New Moon parody. Who Knew (hahaha pun intended! - you'll ee why soon) that mixing the Twilight Saga New Moon parodied clips with P!nk songs (you get the pun now?) would work so well. I couldn't stop laughing.
furthermore, even though The Hillywood Show have such a strict concept or idea to follow (parodying films and music stars doesn't leave alot of room for inprov) they seem to come up with new way to communicate what has to be communicated!!

thanks guys for creating such great entertainment for everyone!
Keep up the amazing work!

in relation for my folio this semester.....
since i am working with fairytales i think these guys are such great inspiration for me.
they are proof that re-creating or parodying (which i don't particularly want to do for my folio) can be done successfully and creatively!
they have combined something that we love to something that is popular, well known or a phenomenon in society today and have created a phenomenon in themselves!
i don't acheive to create a phenomenon but i love their attitude towards their videos (or what i get from watching their videos), which is that they want to express something through something else but still try and keep true to the original as much as possible!!!

just so you know
the videos above are as follows
Eclipse Parody
Lady Gaga's Christmas
The Runaways Parody
The Vampire Diaries Parody
and
Dark Knight.

Enjoy!!

BAM!!! NEW INSPIRATION/PRESENTATION IDEA!!!!!!!

well...

just now (it's like past midnight and yes this just popped into my head just now) i was thinking about assessment pieces, if the images/pieces i've completed will need to be improved or changed or if i should start again, off the top of my head what were the 5 different forms of digital art that we have to cover in our final folio, end of semester presentation etc........

well.....

i was thinking, i have to produce 5 or at least 5 pieces of work right.....
and since there are 5 separate tables/computer sections/bays in the room we're assigned to....
i could use each different table set up to display a different art piece or pieces or any thing like that.

this could work right?
well..............

(p.s. i've come to the conclusion that i shouldn't really type my blogs up late at night and on a whim....
i seem to type some really random stuff or random rubbish half the time....
plus i like using the term "well"and place many full stops or dots after it keeping a sense of suspense and mystery to the blogs.
I apologize sincerely and will try not to use it so often in up coming blogs!)

I've maybe hit a little snag....

Well....
i possibly have stated in an earlier post that for my images and video work I had asked one of my best friends to model for me or allow me to take photos/video with her in them and use them as my final pieces and display them in a public arena.

well.........
during the past few weeks i've tried to organise some time when the both of us can get together for an hr or 2 and do some filming/photography. this has been an ordeal in itself, because we have often conflicting schedules. (eg i'm home/she's at uni, i'm working/she's at home, i've got no homework to worry about or focus on at that time/she's got a major 70%-worth assignment due the next day.) GAH!

well...................
since the past few weeks or our current digital art focus is on digital video art, i have been like in the past organising a time when the both of us can get together to film some shots that i could use.
again the conflicting schedule!
that's when i found out that during this past week, she had taken a tumble and had (or what she originally thought) torn a ligament in her ankle/foot/calf.
that just blew a gigantic hole in my production didn't it?!?!?

well........................................
i decided to film what i could, just like i had done for the first few week's work.
so during this past week, i caught up with my 2 best friends (that still live in this country) for a ho/iced chocolate morning and we had some very humorous and worthwhile discussion and catch-up time. within this time i had found out that my friend's ligament was not torn, but just simply strained or overworked - which is a good thing for her but not my work.

well.......................................................(is this getting annoying yet?)
so on the way there and home i had filmed some stuff, just my feet as i was walking or passing cars at the bus stop or on the bus. that sorta thing.
i had t use those shots - what choice did i have??? i needed something.
in the end i think my video piece looks good and has a great feel to it which relates to my theme nicely.
i would like to maybe just change a few things here and there but i don't know.
i'll see how things go!

here is my video that i created!

video art world

looking on video art world website.

click on narrative then click search.
These are just some of the videos that come up in the results:

  1. Animal Refusal by Sofia Hulten (2006)
  2. White Lies by Susanne Weirich (2007)
  3. Working Girl by Corine Stuebi (2004)
All of these above videos use narrative in a different sense.
Whether it's thought out and edited in a certain way to create narrative or narration or whether it's an organic process of creating the narration, it's still a main element of their video art pieces.

I personally love the organic use of narration, or where there has been no editing or forward planning as such, because I can relate to it on a personal note. It's easy to feel emotion or laugh at the appropriate times because I feel like too rather than believe that someone has created a video where they have created moments where they want people to feel a certain emotion at a certain time.
However, I do like how the use of editing and thought have created a narrative that is forced and manufactured. It highlights a sense of purpose and notoriety and prominence. These videos have been thought about throughly.

in the last week.....

I visited the Disney Exhibition at ACMI during the week.
it shows sketches, animation tests, sections of final products and more of all the classic fairy tales and also the more recent ones such as Tangled.
i loved seeing this because it gave me a further understanding of the dedication and perseverance that all the animators at Disney went through to create such classics.
this has given me a new understanding of how to possibly create my artwork.
i don't want to disrespect or tear up the reputation they have created with their work. and this has given me a new start about how to go about this.

i'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense.
but i thought i would try to write this down!

some past fairy tale references that aren't as they seem!

ALICE
Video game
2000

One item that i remember seeing that has taken the concept of fairy tales and twisted it is a game called Alice.
you can view the wikipedia site about it here.
It's set in a time after the main character Alice (who is based on the character from Lewis Carrol's book but is not the same character. Same goes for all the other characters) lives through some tragic circumstances and is transported back to a wrapped, now crazed Wonderland.
It is very graphic and very violent.
I've never played it but have seen some footage from the game. It definately shares the same concept of taking a well loved story and changing it into something a "little" different.

Call Me When Your Sober
Music video by Evanescence
2006
If the video above doesn't work click here <<-- that is a link to the youtube video.
In this video, Amy (leader of the band Evanescence) plays a character based on the story Little red Riding Hood. She explained in a behind the scenes video that this was what they thought happened after the story is finished, however, instead of the Woodsman coming to the rescue and saving Little Red and her grandmother, Little Red actually run away with the Wolf.
I love the juxtaposition of this video between their song which has a strong rock ballad feel to it with the sweet and innocent story line but with a twist.
You really must watch the video shown above to understand what I have written.

Red Riding Hood
Film
2011

This is possibly not the most obscurer reference to a fairytale but it seems fitting to put this on my blog.
it's a re-make directed by Catherine Hardwick of the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood.
I haven't seen the film but i've heard mixed reviews and what i have seen from trailers and tv commercials/spots it look fairly different to the known and loved classic version.
in this version, RRH (Red Riding Hood) is told she must marry an upright, civilized, and well loved gentleman within her village/community to have her parents proud of her, however she falls for the rebellious boy or man who lives just outside the village. every year this village makes sacrifices to the wolf or wolf man so he would not destroy the village or harm anyone in the village, however something goes wrong and the wolf starts a string of attacks. it's a story that revolves around forbidden love, and community pride - sound familiar?)
like i said i haven't seen the film but i do want to see it (so please don't anyone tell me anything about this film) it looks interesting and hopefully i can use some of the concepts or colours or anything from the film and inspiration for my own work.
here is a trailer of the film found on youtube:

Artwork Proposal

MY DIGITAL ART PROPOSAL
By: Emily Bowman

My chosen topic revolves around fairytales in a modern context. I believe that in some aspects of life, we have lost ourselves within the digital and modern realms of society today. We are caught up with buying, owning or wearing the next best thing or getting wasted and/or drunk every weekend, that half the time we don’t see our mistakes or even the bigger picture falling into the consumer world.
In popular classic fairytales, they tell stories about princes and princesses, highlighting different values that can help us to be better and happier people. However they can also lean towards being too chauvinistic at times. There is always a ‘damsel in distress’ that has to wait for a prince to come and rescue her. As kids grow older, many girls believe that they are spoilt princesses that need to have everything done for them, which I believe to be wrong.
So I thought that combining these two aspects of life would be very interesting. I want to change the way people think about their life in relation to these fairytales. Hopefully people will still read fairytales and relate to the characters, but also seeing them in a modern context will hopefully show them how wrong and lost childhood, society and a person’s identity can become.

My final folio will showcase 5 completed artworks covering digital photography, digital manipulation and video art; branching off into different aspects of some or all of the above listed mediums. I hope to use a range of classic fairytales as the main focus or inspiration for my artwork. I would really like to create a fantasy world of a half cartoon inspired look with real life models and/or objects through my pieces of artwork.
I believe that digital art is the best way to be able to combine both a cartoon style a real life aspect in one image. This way I have full control over how much of a cartoonish approach I need to take with either my photography, filmmaking or visa versa. Computer programs such as Photoshop and iMovie (possibly along with many others too) will help me to create these images.

When presenting my work, I would like to show it like I was reading a story or small sections of many stories in a large storybook. Presenting my work this way will not only highlight the fairytale aspect of my work even more, but hopefully will create juxtaposition against the many very controversial issues that society is faced with today but has no luck in stopping it.
I hope to use a data projector and a computer for my present. I am still considering possibly using an photo frame and projecting the final images within that frame or even sending the final completed works to everybody in the class and watch it on their computer or online.

An artist that has influenced my artwork this semester would have to be Sarah Jones because her work is very simple yet very complex.
Most of the time, her work contains only a single figure or model, however she does communicate constant narration without much movement or explanation.
I love her artworks because they are exactly what I would like to create in my work. I wish to capture a moment in time that holds the whole story yet still be seen as just a still image.

Inspiration from artist of inspiration!!!

Yes, let me just say that the title does sound a little odd, strange, grammatically incorrect, etc but that is how I meant it to be!
and even though I don't need to post a blog entry this week I just wanted to document this!

Anyways, now to the real reason why i'm posting this blog:
this week was collage week in which we learnt or refreshed our memories/minds of the history of collage - it's very fascinating stuff - you need to google it sometime!
we also had the chance to tryour hands at digital collage.
personally i've doen alot of things like this before (meaning creating images for fan pages or what is know as signs for fanpages (link here for my Jonas Brothers myspace fansite - i haven't updated it in about a year! - just click on the picture on the left to view all my signs)) so i had really no trouble understanding the concept. however i did have a little trouble trying to come up with an idea or a composition for an idea this week.
i did end up thinking up an idea and running with it, even if it failed miserably and fell flat on it's digital face! if you want to view the image it can be viewed on my blog here.
But after doing a little reflecting on the work by Sarah Jones (my blog you can view here) I have really felt inspired to create images that don't just look like it fits into my chosen theme or look nice, but that creates a narrative without too much explanation from myself!

opinions are welcome!

so that's it for now....

till i next type!

I really want a usb tablet now!

Sarah Jones - my review of her work

Sarah Jones work is very simple yet very complex.
Most of the time, her work contains only a single figure or model, however her work does communicate constant narration without much movement.
For this reason is why I really love her work.

Take this image for instance. This one is titled Camilla (I) and was photographed in 1998.
This image can hold a lot of different meanings, such as hiding from pain, looking for something under the bed, monsters that hide under the bed, or even a child's game of hide and seek where kids often hid under the bed.

I love these her works because they are exactly what I would like to create in my work.
I would love to be able to create something this cosmic and spectacular that can tell a story or many stories through the use of one still or one image. The viewer doesn't even need to know the real story or the real meaning behind the work to be able to relate some aspect of their life to them or even to identify something within it.

works in progress - opinions welcome!

Today (16/3/11) in class I had the opportunity to begin some work on some of my folio pieces from photos i have taken during the week just past!

This entry will showcase major works in progress or final folio ideas.
stay tuned for heaps more to come!
I would love to hear your opinions!

***NOTE***
THESE ARE WORKS IN PROGRESS SO THEY MIGHT BE/WILL BE CHANGED/EDITED!

This is my Cinderella one. it is a first try and trial of colours and photoshop techniques.
I'm not sure if this is the best of images because it isn't instantly recognizable as Cinderella. However, I do love the use of colour and shading that I have put in digitally. It creates a false-ness to it leaving it to a book or fantasy realm.
***UPDATE  23/3/11***
after reflecting back on this image I believe this would work well is instead of the figure holding a shoe in the right hand, maybe holding a empty beer bottle or mobile phone or something like that. this would connect the context back to modern society as we know it now.
But then does it or would it read as a Cinderella image if the shoe was removed from the image?

This image was created from the collage week of semester. This is my first attempt of a Rapunzel idea.
I really like how this one turned out. It turned out quite cartoonish which is what I'm hoping to achieve either in look or in context. Furthermore, the composition of this image works quite well I believe. There are the 3 main or larger points of focus - model (a.k.a me), tower, and the clouds - but the colours work really well which is indeed a focal point in itself!

This is my first trial of video art. It's a abstract or representative look at Little Red Riding Hood after the wolf incident.
I love the effects that i used and how that creates feeling and emotion through-out the piece. also i was originally thinking about removing the original sound from the clips and adding some music or sound effects to the end result, however i think the organic sounds and background noise heighten the mood, feeling and emotion even more.
To view the video on youtube and comment directly on the video, click here!

So this one is my digital painting piece of artwork.
it's a subtle reflection on Sleeping Beauty. She sits outside all day wanting sleep, isolated from the world and alone. Stuck in her every day living, she wants to escape. but she constantly remind herself that she doesn't need a prince to come and wake her up...she just needs that sleep, rest and confidence in herself. she struggles with herself to find that though....
i did create the sepia tone and flowers using photoshop and painter combined. i didn't want to create an "overboard" painting on the computer, i just wanted to create something more subtle!
i like the framing of this image which is a little different to my others.
I'm not so sure on the text or the style of the text that i've used here....i think i went a little over board with the text.....
the framing of the text i'm not so sure on either. maybe if i overlaid the text on the image itself instead of creating a sort of frame.....
i think the colour swap has worked well though. I mean how the main part of the image is saturated and washed away but the flowers are almost bright and colourful.
*** Flowers are meant to look fake here ***

This is my stop motion digital artwork. it's a modern take on Snow White and her loneliness.... I really like how it ended up.
I was  nervous about doing this art form because i had no idea about what to do.  I apologise if you can't read the writing in the video, hopefully most of the writing can be read.
This is my first attempt of stop motion animation so please don't  judge it on that aspect. I'm not so sure that he ending is any good but i think it highlights the mood overall
Comments welcome!

Inspiration from childhood

When I was younger, I owned a book called Original Fairy Tales From the Brothers Grimm Classic Edition. (the cover is pictured below - thanks for Amazon.com)

However, a few years or months back i had it packed away into storage because I had no room for it to sit in my bedroom nor did i read it that often anymore. I didn't think I would need to read again.
OBVIOUSLY I WAS WRONG!!!
After some careful searching through boxes that have been put in storage - amongst old bed frames, toys, games, some teaching things from my mother and most likely many, many, many creepy crawllies and other begs and inspects - I have found this book with help from my father.

This book has only a few fairy tales in it however they are the full versions of fairy tales without being changed for a younger audience like Disney does sometimes or how many television channels edit movies such as Harry Potter if they are shown at an early time slot, have possibly scary scenes in it and might have younger 'eyes' watching.
These are the full length fairy tales as they were meant to be read.
This is will be used as my inspiration for a few of my ideas!

experimentation for artworks - week 2

These are just a few experimental drawings I drew the other night.
Both of these are drawn on my leg. I have also drawn these on paper but I wanted to see how the design looked on skin.
As I started to draw these and thought that they represented the fairy tale characters that I wish to represent and re-create quite well in a visual sense.

Possibly for Cinderella or Red Riding Hood.

This one would possibly best work with the Snow White story/character.

Expansion on a theme

Okay... a few days ago i posted this comment on my own post about a theme:

"A comment on my own post....original!
Anyways...

I have a feeling I might go with Looking Through The Looking Glass with an Alice in Wonderland aspect to it....but i need some advice and help.
I have some ideas using this topic with photography but I have no clue how to incorporate that into animation or stop motion.
Jenna...if you are reading this can you please help me?"

Whole post can be viewed by clicking here

So I have been thinking about the theme for my folio and i still do like the Alice In Wonderland idea, however I feel like it should be modified slightly.
I was thinking well maybe I can create more of a modern twist on fairytales.
Such as Fairytales in the Modern world/Society.
hmmm........ still thinking!
